Phantom Incoming Links?

March 21, 2009

Why is it that in my WordPress dashboard I frequently find links in my “Incoming Links” section which, upon inspection, don’t actually link to my blog? I’ll check the pages’ source code and everything. I’d say that about half of my allegedly incoming links don’t even seem to link to me. What’s the deal?

Where can I Have a Wiki Hosted?

March 21, 2009

Back when I was working on my RPG Maker game, Soulstorm Legacy, I started a wiki for all my SsL-related worldbuilding. The wiki was an offline thing, hosted on my computer using Xampp. Lately I’ve been interested in pursuing a similar, albeit online venture for just-for-fun worldbuilding.

Sadly, I’ve had a lot of trouble finding a host. I’ve tried Editthis.info, but they don’t allow image uploads any more, and they didn’t allot enough space anyway. I’ve also tried Wiki-site.com, but their free accounts don’t allow much customization and the wiki logo redirects to their homepage instead of your wiki’s.

So, does anyone know of a wiki host that…

  • Is free.
  • Is powered by Mediawiki.
  • Allows the upload of images.
  • Allots users with enough webspace.
  • Allows customization of the wiki.
  • ?

    Wikisource

    March 21, 2009

So I was trying to browse Wikisource for sacred texts from different religions, when I learned just how damned hard it was to navigate. Seriously. A “sacred texts” category would have been useful. Oh well, I guess Wikipedia is the only useful thing the Wikimedia Foundation ever came up with.

    Dear People Magazine

No one gives a fuck about Fergie’s new “mini-makeover.”

    Hey Arabic Speakers

    March 15, 2009

And by “speakers” I mean “readers.” How the hell do you read those squiggly little lines on your screens? Jesus Christ, they’re friggin’ unintelligible! I’d have to turn up the zoom to like 250% to be able to tell each symbol apart!

I’m serious though, I’m not poking fun at Arabic, I want to know how you manage.

    P.E.A.C.E.
Cannabis is as essential to sustainable human existence on Earth as water is.

    Lol.

    Testing Ghosts

    March 11, 2009

If ghosts are really the spirits of dead people, and they really manifest themselves in period clothing, then a statistical analysis of sighting claims should show that the quantity of claims reporting apparitions in ancient styles of clothing far outnumber more recent styles (like Victorian).

This is because far more people have lived and died from periods prior to the devlopment of comparitively modern styles. If more sightings are reported of more recognizable and historical recent styles of dress, however, it would suggest that alleged ghost sightings are colored by culture and do not represent an objectively real phenomenon.

    The Scaphognathus Description

    March 11, 2009

Here is a thumbnail of the original description of the Solnhofen pterosaur genus Scaphognathus.

(Excerpt from page 534 of “Wagner, J. A. 1861 Übersicht über die fossilen Reptilen des lithographischen Schiefers in Bayern nach ihren Gattungen und Arten. Sber. k. bayer. Akad. Wiss. math.-phys. Kl.”)

I hope to update this with an English translation soon.

Random Idea for an SF Story

    March 7, 2009

Far into the future humans have colonized hundreds of planets. Some of the more isolated planets have become cut-off from the rest of human civilization. One of these planets gradually loses its technological prowess and develops into a pious religious society.

Its population are confident creationists because humans are the only terrestrial lifeform present; the absence of any obvious links between human and the native wildlife of the world prevents any development of a theory of evolution. When contact with the rest of humanity is serendipitously reinstated the off-world humans must now come to terms with the science their human visitors bring with them. Existential and spiritual angst ensues.

    Hiroshima

    March 1, 2009

I tried to post this in response to a bunch of sick fuckers saying that the Japanese “deserved” the whole Hiroshima/Nagasaki thing at Youtube, but it was too long…

Also, to all you people saying the Japanese deserved this, remember that the atomic attacks were against *civilians*, not military targets. One wonders what the thousands of children did to deserve being scorched alive by a radioactive shockwave. Babies only matter when they’re in utero, I guess. *waves flag*

Oh, and call attacks against defenseless civilians meant to intimidate governments what it is; terrorism. Or do only brown skinned terrorists with turbans on their heads count? You people are sick.
